Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)
Canadian Psychological Association (CPA)

The Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) is the national association for the science, practice and education of psychology in Canada. The CPA is a not-for-profit corporation that aims to improve the health and welfare of all Canadians; promote excellence and innovation in psychological research, education, and practice; promote the advancement, development, dissemination, and application of psychological knowledge; and to provide high-quality services to members.

Continuing Education (CE) Approval Programme
Continuing Education (CE) Approval Programme

Continuing Education (CE) Approval Programme facilitates the development and recognition of continuing education activities, the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) offers a system for reviewing and approving organizations and individuals that offer formal CE programmes and activities, including universities, clinics, professional associations, specialty societies, consulting firms, and individual psychologists. Continuing education is intended to provide psychologists with new information, research, and skills in their area of focus, but is not intended to replace formal degree or internship training. CE in psychology is an ongoing process consisting of learning activities that are relevant to psychological practice, education and science, enable psychologists to keep pace with emerging issues and technologies; and allow psychologists to maintain, develop, and increase competencies in order to improve services to the public and enhance contributions to the profession.

The CPA approval programme and associated standards apply only to the subset of CE activities that are structured and organized by a provider or sponsor. Continuing education or professional development can also occur through participation in other learning activities as well as self-directed studies. Many professions now recognize the value of structured self-initiated learning projects, personal practice reviews, audits, incident reports, utilization studies, research, teaching, and clinical practice guideline development as some of the many options that can contribute to continuing professional education.

CPA assures that the CE programmes and activities of the sponsoring organizations and individuals are adequately planned and administered to meet specified standards, criteria, and procedures. CPA, through its Registrar for the Office of Accreditation, will review proposed new activities, as well as sponsors’ ongoing activities, through the annual report process. Approval relates only to the ability to sponsor CE activities. It is not accreditation of the sponsor organization. Accreditation is reserved for formal educational training (graduate and internship) programmes. Advertising and promotional materials can refer to approval and are not to use the term ‘accreditation’. The granting of approval for an organization to sponsor CE does not constitute approval of that organization in its other activities. CPA has no legal or financial obligations to either approved sponsors or to those individuals registered for sponsors’ continuing education activities.

The Council on Psychosomatic Medicine American Psychiatric Association (APA)
The Council on Psychosomatic Medicine American Psychiatric Association (APA)

The Council on Psychosomatic Medicine focuses on the psychiatric care of people who are medically ill. It recognizes that integration of biopsychosocial care is vital to the well-being of patients, and that full membership in the house of medicine is essential to the well-being of psychiatry. It accomplishes its goals by initiatives related to research, clinical care, education, and health care policy. They:

  • Provide leadership at the interface of psychiatry with other medical specialties.
  • Provide training and education to psychiatrists and other physicians, residents (including psychiatric residents), and medical students at scientific meetings and in other settings about the special needs of those with psychiatric illness in medically ill and complex medically ill populations.
  • Provide scientific and clinical expertise on issues surrounding comorbidities such as, but not limited to HIV psychiatry and integrated care.
  • Advocate for the enhancement of training in psychosomatic medicine (consultation-liaison psychiatry) in medical schools and residency training programs.
  • Create educational materials about the needs of those with psychiatric illness in medically ill and complex medically ill populations and the role of psychiatry/psychiatrists in meeting those needs for medical and non-medical audiences.
  • Work with other components and/or organizations on health care policy initiatives: the evaluation and design of delivery systems, models of care, and payment mechanisms aimed at promoting high degrees of quality and cost-effectiveness in those with significant medical-psychiatric comorbidity.
  • Support APA’s advocacy efforts to increase the funding of research in these areas.
  • Support and/or lead ongoing efforts to improve the recruitment of psychiatrists into psychosomatic medicine (consultation-liaison psychiatry) fellowship programs.

The Delaware Project - University of Delaware
The Delaware Project - University of Delaware

The Delaware Project aims to redefine psychological clinical science training in ways that emphasize continuity across a spectrum of research activities concerned with (a) basic mechanisms of psychopathology and behavior change, (b) intervention generation and refinement, (c) intervention efficacy and effectiveness, and (d) implementation and dissemination. As a first step, the Project brought together clinical scientists representing different sectors of this spectrum to engage in a dialogue leading to the articulation of new, improved models for training. The meeting took place in October 2011 at the University of Delaware.
