Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
The Child and Adolescent Mood Program (CHAMP) is part of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia that treat a variety of conditions including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, disruptive mood dysregulation disorder and frequently co-occurring conditions such as ADHD. Possible treatment options may include supportive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), group therapy, or medication to help manage your child’s symptoms
When a person calls to make an appointment with CHAMP, you’ll speak with an intake coordinator. This person will ask questions to help assess whether your child may be depressed. You will be asked about things like your child’s sleeping and eating habits, his energy levels, and whether he’s been feeling lonely or angry. We will also ask about any additional medical conditions your child may have. These questions help us determine what kind of care your child may need. If we think that your child would benefit from CHAMP, your intake coordinator will schedule two appointments: an evaluation appointment and a feedback appointment. After these sessions, we will provide recommended next steps for treatment and a plan for follow-up care. Learn more about what to expect at these appointments.

Children's Intensive Emotional and Behavioral Services (CIEBS) -
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
Children's Intensive Emotional and Behavioral Services (CIEBS) provides comprehensive psychiatric partial hospitalization services in a trauma-informed, behaviorally based therapeutic setting to children in the Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Ocean Counties of New Jersey. The program is for children between the ages of 5 and 13 who have significant emotional, behavioral and social needs. Children are referred to us by schools, pediatricians, the mental health community, child protective services and parents. Our patients have a variety of behavioral, emotional and social needs that are significantly impacting the child’s ability to learn and participate constructively in their home, school or community. CIEBS offers two separate but integrated psychiatric programs.
- Children’s Intensive Emotional and Behavioral Services, a full-day psychiatric program that runs six hours a day (9 a.m.-3 p.m.), five days a week. The program is available for children age 5 to 13.
- The Children’s Extended Day Hospital Program, an extended-day psychiatric program that runs 4½ hours a day (3-7:30 p.m.), two to four days a week. The program is available for children age 8 to 13.
Children's Intensive Emotional and Behavioral Services is open to children age 5 to 13, who live in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Ocean counties in New Jersey. Children in this program may have a history of being rejected, expelled or excluded from schools and other community programs because their behavioral challenges have made it difficult for them to participate. They likely present with a combination of psychiatric symptoms and severe impairment of functioning in the home, school and/or community, and may be considered at-risk for being hospitalized, expelled from school or placed in more restrictive settings, such as residential placement. Children who attend our programs may also have a history of:
- Prenatal/perinatal complications
- Developmental delays
- Prenatal exposure to drugs or alcohol
- Neglect, abuse, and trauma
Trauma-informed care recognizes and responds to these experiences and creates a safe place for the children to learn new behaviors. Their services include:
- Thorough screening and evaluation
- Psychiatric evaluation, consultation and medication monitoring
- Expressive therapy groups
- Family therapy
- Individual therapy tailored to the child’s/family’s needs, as needed
- Psychoeducational groups
- Simulated classroom setting and activities
- High level of supervision and safety for aggressive and combative behaviors
- Case management/care coordination
- Creative therapies
- Daily living skills and health training
- Daily recreational therapy
- Referral to — and consultation with — community resources
- Psychoeducation/psychotherapy group for parents of current and former patients
- Transitional discharge planning
- Transportation is provided for children based on distance from the child’s residence to the CHOP Specialty Care Center in Mays Landing, NJ. Alternative transportation can be discussed.
The team includes psychiatrists, physicians, mental health therapists, nurses and other behavioral health professionals. We work together to provide comprehensive evaluations and individualized treatment to each child. Our approach to care incorporates the child, family and community and our goal is to return children to their school and community. When children enter one of our partial hospital programs, they are placed in developmentally appropriate treatment rooms that become the setting for their therapy. Within this safe, predictable, and therapeutic environment, children receive trauma-informed, behaviorally focused, individualized treatment that encourages family and community participation. Treatment focuses on teaching children how to develop safe adaptive behaviors, emotional self-regulation and pro-social skills as building blocks that will improve their academic learning potential. Interventions are designed to help them reach their behavioral, emotional, social and learning potential.

PeerLink Initiative Uganda (PELI-U)
PeerLink Initiative Uganda (PELI-U) acknowledges the importance of Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Education in preparing children to transit from home to school and ensure that children have adequate care and support. We set up an ECD section within the community library. Through this section children aged 2-5 are exposed to play, read, dance, parent child interaction sessions and oral literature sessions. Currently the ECD activities are implemented on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Our plan is to set up fully fledged ECD units in 6 community based libraries and later on scale up ECD activities to other community libraries. Through the Early Childhood Development Unit (ECD) we organize ECD days which bring together children in the community to play, dance, sing, socialize and get guidance on hygiene and sanitation. The parents and guardians are taken through sessions of parenting skills, child care, child feeding, children rights and hygiene and sanitation.

Kind Communities – A Bridge to Youth Mental Wellness -
Born This Way Foundation
Kind Communities – A Bridge to Youth Mental Wellness is a survey of over 4,000 young people and parents about mental health. Some of their key findings include:
- Kindness matters: oung people who describe their environments as kind are more likely to be mentally healthy.
- Peer networks matter: youth rely on a small set of close friends for support. A
- Mental health resources matter>: young people with access to tangible resources are more mentally healthy. Furthermore, youth want to empower themselves with knowledge and skills to support their own wellness – and assist a friend who might be in crisis – but we need to do a better job providing those resources.

Medication Options: Young People and Mental Health -
Peers Envisioning and Engaging in Recovery Services (PEERS)
PEERS, in collaboration with Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services, has produced a series of three videos for East Bay youth. The videos feature interviews with health care professionals, young people, public servants, and many others with expertise and experience in this area. This series is intended to help young people make informed decisions when they’re prescribed psychiatric medication from health care providers.
Young people, especially Transition Age Youth, are often prescribed psychiatric medication following a formal diagnosis by a health care provider. Yet, many young people are under-informed about the benefits, risks, and side-effects of the medications they’re provided. In short, young people often don’t understand their rights with regards to psychiatric medications. These three videos assist youth in making careful, informed decisions about their own health.

OD Youth project is designed to promote access to Education by Youth with disabilities, which is apparently a big challenge for many YWDs. This severely affects their chances of getting employment opportunities. Studies conducted by NUDIPU show that UPE and USE opportunities had benefited the young people without disabilities much more than it had YPWDs. This project, therefore, strives to enhance independent living of young disabled women and men in Uganda. Objectives are improved access to, and completion rate of, quality education, training and employment for young disabled women and men in target areas, and thus securing their advancement and participation in their communities.

Partnership for the Prevention & Protection of Children -
Transcultural Pychsosocial Organisation - Cambodia (TPO)
Partnership for the Prevention & Protection of Children provides support and services to survivors of gender-based violence, vulnerable children and local authorities in Kanteu 1 and Kanteu 2 communes, Banan district, Battambang province. While providing mental health services is front and center of what we do, the ultimate goal of this project is to strengthen Cambodia’s child protection system in response to and to prevent violence, and to promote a protective family environment.
TPO raising awareness with parents about mental health, risks to children and how they can stay safe. Throughout the project, TPO is also working closely with government at national and sub-national levels, as well as other NGOs active in the community, to build a stronger protective family environment which will lead to improved prevention of abuse and better child protection responses.
- Awareness Raising & Training: TPO will deliver the following activities in order to strengthen awareness and understanding of domestic violence and psychosocial problems including organize awareness raising activities in the communities about domestic violence and psychosocial problems, training focal people in the community in identifying domestic violence and mental health problems and in providing emotional support to the victims, identify and select members of the local authorities to train them in Mental Health First Aid, Train Child Club members and representatives in identifying and supporting children at risk and form a Child Friendly club.
- Self Help Groups: TPO provides support with livelihood initiatives. Here we are facilitating training in raising chickens and preparing food for them. TPO establishes self-help groups for women who are victims of domestic violence as well as self-help groups for vulnerable children. Self-help groups give people the opportunity to express their feelings and to find help and support from group members with similar experiences. Self-help group activities give participants improved mental well-being; increased confidence, increased preparedness and openness with regards to talking about the violence and abuse, to report to authorities, and to advocate for their rights, greater ability to support and advocate for other members in the community who have similar problems, reduced stress, depression, anxiety
- Counseling: TPO Cambodia provides counseling to those in the community who need closer individual attention and support and who are suffering from severe mental health and psychosocial problems as a result of domestic violence or are vulnerable children.
- Referral & Networking: we work on creating effective referral mechanisms with other organizations so that support for survivors of domestic violence and for vulnerable children is maximized. We also work with the community to set up a functional network that can respond to violence and refer victims to appropriate services.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
TiPS is a Pennsylvania HealthChoices program designed to increase the availability of child psychiatry consultation teams, regionally and by phone, to primary care providers (PCPs) and other prescribers of psychotropic medications. The program is available for children insured by Pennsylvania’s Medical Assistance (Medicaid) Program. TiPS provides real-time, peer-to-peer resources to the PCPs who need immediate consultative advice for children (up to age 21) with behavioral health concerns. TiPS psychiatrists do not prescribe medications. There is one TiPS team in each of the five HealthChoices zones in Pennsylvania. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia provides consultation to providers in the Southeast Zone. Once your practice enrolls in TiPS, your regional team will come to your office or provide education over the phone for you and your staff. They will explain the program, how to access services, answer questions, and discuss expectations.

The Kenya Integrated Intervention Model for Dialogue and Screening (KIDS) -

KIDS is a program in Kenya whose focus is on promoting mental health, preventing illness and treating existing mental illness among children. Child and adolescent mental illness is one of the seven Grand challenges on mental health. The project provided an approach which aimed at promoting children’s mental well-being and support of positive cognitive development to break the vicious cycle of mental illness from continuing through adulthood which might have a detrimental effect on the individual’s quality of life. KIDS has demonstrated the feasibility of a multi-stakeholder intervention service model that maximizes the potential of children by promoting mental well-being, preventing mental illness, and treating existing mental illness.

The Neuropsychology and Assessment Service -
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
The Neuropsychology and Assessment Service at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) provides evaluation and consultation services for children with specific medical disorders. The purpose of a neuropsychological evaluation is to understand how medical conditions or treatments involving the brain or central nervous system affect the person’s development, including impacts on cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. We work with patients from infancy through young adulthood. They manage or diagnose neurocognitive effects associated with medical conditions including, as major categories and examples:
- Brain tumor and other childhood cancers
- Central nervous system infection
- Cerebral palsy
- Cerebrovascular disease or stroke
- Craniofacial conditions
- Demyelinating disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis, ADEM)
- Epilepsy
- Genetic/metabolic disorders
- Heart disease (e.g., congenital heart disease, heart failure, heart transplant)
- Hydrocephalus
- Hypoxic or anoxic brain injury
- Mitochondrial disorders
- Neurotoxic exposures
- Spina bifida
- Traumatic brain injury
Neuropsychologists evaluate cognitive skills such as attention, learning, memory, language, reasoning and problem solving, perceptual and sensory/motor functions. This helps us understand brain functioning in the course of development and evaluate the potential need for interventions to support development. They also evaluate psychological, emotional, and behavioral factors which may be associated with patients’ medical conditions and can help differentiate between cognitive problems that arise from medical conditions and those that arise from other causes. They provide a number of different services, including comprehensive and targeted neuropsychological evaluations as well as neuropsychological consultation. Their goal is to identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses, answer questions you have about your child’s cognitive functioning, and make treatment and service recommendations to help your child reach their full potential.

The Royal's Youth Services -
The Royal Mental Health Care
The Royal offers intensive and specialized mental health services to youth with early onset major psychiatric disorders and/or complex psychiatric illnesses that are resistant to treatment.
- The Children and Youth – Specialized Psychiatric and Mental Health Services program (CY-SPMHS): is a program tat delivers specialized psychiatric and mental health services for children and youth under shared regional leadership and using a centralized intake process. Youth mental health specialists from both organizations collaborate to offer the best possible care to young people in our region. Young people are treated by a team of professionals with expertise in treating a wide range of mental illnesses with sensitivity to meet the unique needs of youth. The team consists of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, child and youth counselors, occupational therapists, addiction counselors as well as special education teachers.
- The Youth Psychiatry Program at The Royal emphasizes treating young people with cooperation and respect while offering a full range of mental health services to meet the unique needs of youth in our community. The program component at The Royal is focused primarily on youth from the ages of 16 to 18. However, there is flexibility in the age range and youth below the age of 16 may be served at The Royal, depending on their best clinical interests. Typically youth under 16 years of age receive their treatment at the CHEO.
-
Inpatient Hospitalization: the inpatient hospitalization unit provides comprehensive assessment, stabilization and treatment for youth who have a serious psychiatric illness and are unable to function in less supportive environments. The unit has eight beds and offers intensive programming and support to help youth successfully transition back to their families and communities as quickly as possible.
-
The partial hospitalization unit provides day services for youth with serious psychiatric disorders who require intensive treatment in order to function in their community. Because this program is less intrusive than inpatient hospitalization, youth suitable for this unit must be stable enough that they don’t require inpatient hospitalization. However, this unit does have the ability to step-up or step-down interventions as necessary within an individual youth’s treatment plan.
-
The day treatment unit provides comprehensive assessment, clarification of a diagnosis, intensive treatment and psycho-social rehabilitation in a community high school setting in partnership with education for youth with severe and early onset major psychiatric disorders. This unit is supported by both a specialized mental health team and special education teachers.
-
Outpatient Services: outpatient services, organized as general and specialized clinics, offers assessment, consultation and treatment services to youth who can function in the community with less intensive clinical support. These services are delivered in collaboration with community mental health providers.
-
Outreach Services: outreach services provide the essential link to consultative and collaborative partnerships for youth suffering from major psychiatric disorders who are living in the counties of Renfrew, Prescott-Russell, Stormont, Dundas or Glengarry. The interdisciplinary mental health team works in collaboration with the community in which the youth lives to ensure that specialized psychiatric services are available to him or her.
-
Research: The Royal’s Youth Psychiatry Program has a strong research component aimed at better understanding and improving treatment for mental illness in the youth population. Youth may be asked to participate in a research project by their psychiatrist. With the youth’s consent, they may be approached by research staff to provide them with information about participating in a study.
