The Benefits Campaign run by being is a group of people campaigning for a fairer benefits system that better understands and supports you.

Rethink Mental Illness deliver 16 mental health Carers Services which are proven to deliver wellbeing for carers and over 95% of people using our services say they are respected, listened to and get the right kind of support. They constantly strive for improvement to our services and they all operate within our own Quality Assurance Programme.

The court process can be confusing and overwhelming for the families and carers of people with mental illness. We provide two court-based Community Advice and Support Services in Plymouth, Bodmin and Truro. We provide advice and support in courts to offenders and their families to aid resettlement and reintegration, with the aim of reducing offending. Our support is integral to the successful operating of Community Justice courts in Plymouth, taking a problem-solving approach and working in partnership with designated police and probation officers. We ensure that families and partners of prisoners are assisted at the point of sentence so they understand more about the court and prison systems and are better able to keep in touch. We continue to work with offenders afterwards, providing an open door and signposting people to other support services.

• Talking therapies in prison: based upon our reputation for delivering community based talking therapies, we have recently begun delivering talking therapies within the prison system. We are now the largest provider of primary care psychological therapy services in the country, after the NHS. We are delivering services across five prisons in Doncaster and two prisons in Wakefield.
• Resettlement: since April 2011 we have worked in HMP Nottingham with Nottingham Healthcare NHS Trust to provide personalised resettlement support for offenders with an identified mental health need who are leaving prison after a sentence of less than a year. By providing a consistent source of support, which short-term offenders with mental health needs currently lack, we improve offenders’ social and psychological outcomes as well as reduce reoffending rates. This group of people “fall through the net” of statutory service because they do not qualify for support from the probation service and are not tracked through prison by mental health services. Once released from prison this group is very vulnerable to a further decline in their mental health and/or a high likelihood of reoffending. The resettlement workers are supervised by the NHS outreach worker based in the prison (within existing NHS provision). Prisoners identified as having a mental health problem on reception to the prison are immediately linked with the resettlement workers. The team supports the person throughout their sentence, advocating (in a non-technical sense) on their behalf in the community for the necessary support prior to release.

Rethink Mental Illness runs a number of nursing and residential care homes, providing nearly 200 beds and offering rehabilitation and support to people with severe and long-term mental illness. Rethink Recovery House has helped me to make a whole turnaround from where I was when I came first to the house after five years in different hospitals. I was extremely anxious, without hope and felt totally unable to keep up with everyday life. With staff support and continuous planning and feedback from care plans I have improved considerably. They provide flexible, responsive and needs-led care based on our core beliefs in recovery and the involvement of individuals in the management of their own condition. All our homes have the ultimate aim of enabling residents to move on to more independent accommodation and sustaining their independence by providing access to flexible staff support that meets their changing needs. Nursing and residential care services offer a variety of nursing and residential care services including:

They have recently developed a toolkit of resources to support the 2014/15 national CQUIN (Commissioning for Quality and Innovation) programme to improve the physical health of people affected by mental illness. This contains our Integrated Physical Health Pathway, endorsed by the Royal Colleges of GPs, Nursing and Psychiatrists, the Physical Health Check tool, the SARIT (Self-Assessment of Readiness for Implementation tool), information sheets and practical resources to help staff implementing the CQUIN. • CQUIN toolki: this set of resources support the implementation of the national CQUIN for 2014/15 to improve the physical health of people affected by mental illness. This includes our updated Integrated Physical Health Pathway and Physical Health Check tool, the SARIT (Self-Assessment of Readiness for Implementation tool), posters, factsheets and other resources for health professionals.
• Physical health leaflet for people using mental health inpatient services. Rethink Mental Illness has designed a new information leaflet about physical health checks in inpatient mental health services so that people know what to expect. This leaflet is also part of our comprehensive CQUIN toolkit above.
• Good health guide: support people you work with by sharing this guide to healthy living. It is full of practical information and helpful tips for people affected by mental illness.
• Physical health guide for carers: this is our guide to physical health for carers, families and friends. This booklet helps carers to get better physical healthcare for the person they support. It contains tips on medication, preparing for GP appointments and information sharing.

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Mental Health is a group of MPs and Peers from all political parties who are interested in mental health. Rethink Mental Illness and the Royal College of Psychiatrists provide the secretariat for the APPG. Together, they help shape the group’s agenda and organise events with Government Ministers, NHS organisations, health professionals, research bodies and people with experience of mental illness. 

The APPG is holding an inquiry into the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health, the Government's five-year strategy to improve our mental health services. The inquiry will look at areas of improvement and areas that need more focus. At the end of 2018, we will produce a report and a series of recommendations for the Government to keep a spotlight on mental health. The open call for written evidence closed on 15th June 2018. We have had nearly 70 responses to the inquiry from service users, professionals and stakeholders including King's Fund, the CQC, NHS England. We held a meeting of service users and carers to get their views on the Government's plan to improve mental health and visited a community mental health service, both of which will contribute to the final inquiry. 

In 2017, we held events on the government consultations on supported housing and welfare for those with mental health problems. We hosted a drop-in session for MPs about the Five Year Forward View for Mental Health Dashboard, so parliamentarians could better hold the Government to account on how their local mental health services were improving.

The independent Schizophrenia Commission was established by Rethink Mental Illness to scope the state of care and outcomes for people living with Schizophrenia in England. In 2012 the Commission published a groundbreaking report called Schizophrenia - The Abandoned Illness. This revealed a dysfunctional system that is not delivering the quality of treatment people need for recovery and includes key recommendations to promote change. Time to Change is England’s most ambitious programme to end the stigma and discrimination experienced by people with mental health problems. It’s led by Rethink Mental Illness, in partnership with Mind, because it's an issue that has such a big impact on the lives of our supporters and members. Speaking openly about mental health is a vital element in changing the way we all think and act about mental health. Since 2009, Time to Change campaign bursts have inspired thousands of conversations, shared peoples’ stories, and shown practical ways to be in other people’s corners – whether they’re a friend, family member or colleague. It speaks to adults and the next generation of young people coming through school. An annual Time to Talk Day, in February, also gives individuals, organisations and schools the chance to get the nation talking about mental health.

SAMH Creative MINDSET Hub brings mental wellness to all through meaningful arts experiences. A team of art therapists and facilitators use art, music and dance as a form of therapy for participants to explore and express their feelings. Their activities include art making sessions, counselling and art therapies. Many of our activities are open to the public to encourage awareness and reduce stigma for persons with mental illness. SAMH offer services, including counselling, art therapy and occupational therapy, that are integrated with expressive arts to helps individual relieve stress and improve their quality of life.

• Arts Skills: learn new skills and express your feelings through the visual arts, music and dance including open group sessions, closed group sessions and individual sessions for public, persons-in-recovery and caregivers​.
• Counselling and Art Therapy​: counsellors and professional art therapists are at hand to guide you through difficult life events and recovery from mental illness including individual therapy and group therapy for youths, adults and seniors.
• Occupational Therapy: experiential activities that can help you overcome the effects of mental illness and function better in daily life. These can range from arts and craft, to sensory art and self-awareness. Occupational therapists also conduct talks that teach adaptive skills on managing time, stress, finances and other aspects of daily life including individual therapy and group therapy for public and persons-in-recovery.
• External Talks and Workshops: talks and experiential workshop that share the holistic benefits of expressive arts and sports on mental health. Participants can learn how to de-stress and care for their mental health, enabling them to be more productive at work and leisure for students and working adults

SAMH Insight Centre is SAMH's counselling services for persons with psychiatric, psychological and emotional needs, as well as their families. MINDSET Learning Hub is Singapore’s first and only job training and placement centre that provides Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) training to persons in recovery. At MLH, they create a conducive environment that supports learning needs. The SAMH Activity Hub provides psychosocial rehabilitative programmes to assist residents in their recovery from mental illness and to reintegrating them into the community. Activity Hub’s services include occupational therapy, social work, psychological services and vocational placements. SAMH manages the Activity Hub @ Pelangi Village and conducts psychosocial rehabilitative programmes for residents. Residents are assisted in their recovery and reintegration into the community through:

• Art Therapy: therapeutic rehabilitation to residents through activities such as drawing, ceramics, sculpture, woodworking and painting. Art therapy intervention is also provided for residents to express themselves and resolve issues through the creative processes.
• Music Therapy: music helps residents open up and communicate their deep feelings and emotions. Through it, residents can develop relationships based on trust with therapists. It also enables residents to find emotional support, build bonds with others and develop a sense of community.
• Occupational Therapy: help residents achieve a better quality of life through intensive occupational therapy. Their efforts focus on three components of occupational performance. These are the Activities of Daily Living (ADL), leisure and vocational engagement.
• Psychological Services: help residents relieve psychological distress and dysfunction through quality psychological services. Conducted by mental health professionals, these sessions may consist of individualised assessments and interventions, psychoeducation, cognitive training, anger management and social skills training. They also provide treatment that is informed by the findings of the assessments. Treatment is conducted through individual therapy or group therapy at the Activity Hub or via outreach.
• Social Work: manage the needs and condition of each resident through individualised case management. Job and social assessments, personal skills training sessions and support groups are also conducted to create an engaging rehabilitative environment for residents. Their aim is to help residents maximise their potential, self-esteem and quality of life.
• Vocational Services facilitate the reintegration of residents by providing training and competitive employment opportunities. Residents are aided in the development of their skills, confidence, financial stability and independence. Our vocational services include:

The SAMH Mobile Support Team aims to bring mental health services to the community.
