The OPDI Peer Support Core Essentials™ Program is a basic skills training for people who have recovered their own mental health to the point of being ready to support others on their recovery journey. It was developed through a thorough consultative process with their members and others, and can be made available on a cost recovery basis whenever there is a critical mass of learners and an OPDI licensed trainer available.

• OPDI Peer Support Core Essentials™ Program involves five full days face-to-face in the classroom with two trainers in which there are many individual exercises, group exercises and role plays in class time, and daily written reflections assigned as homework. Prior to classroom training, a required introductory module is delivered via one webinar by OPDI staff. Then, some content from other modules is introduced in subsequent webinars with trainers. Homework (information gathering) is assigned to be brought for use in class. Participants are evaluated by the trainers, and can earn Level 1 or 1R recognition document. Level 1 means the person successfully completed the classroom training. Level 1R means the trainer recommends them to continue on and do an internship in order to earn their Level 2, or “OPDI Certified Peer Supporter”.
• Diabetes and Mental Health Peer Support Project: a two-day training using the same consultative approach as the Core Essentials program used, and leveraging from trainers that OPDI already has in place. Seven of our first ten Core Essentials trainers were trained to deliver the diabetes training, and in total 80 peer supporters across Ontario to date were trained to provide diabetes support to their peers.

The Council on Medical Education and Lifelong Learning monitors emerging issues and supports the development of resources and programs for psychiatric education in the United States at every level. These efforts include premedical education, medical education, graduate medical education for residents and fellows in psychiatry (both basic education and subspecialty areas), psychiatry aspects of graduate medical education for other medical specialties, and postgraduate continuing medical education and lifelong learning. The council advises and assists APA’s Division of Education in the development, implementation, and promotion of its education programs and initiatives. Highlights of Responsibilities include:

• Oversee planning, coordinating, and evaluating all continuing medical education efforts and activities of APA.
• Identify emerging issues related to undergraduate medical education and assist in developing effective, appropriate psychiatric education for all future physicians.
• Support medical student recruitment into psychiatry.
• Provide recommendations regarding all aspects of graduate medical education in psychiatry including the development of the highest quality psychiatric training program planning, curriculum, and career development; and residency teaching and interface with medical student education, primary care, and other medical specialty education and post-residency fellowship training.
• Support APA’s response to proposed changes in the ACGME Essentials and the Special Requirements for Psychiatry and subspecialty programs.
• Work alongside other APA components and divisions on issues related to all levels of psychiatric education.

TheMHS Learning Network Inc. is an international learning network for improving mental health services in Australia and New Zealand. TheMHS events bring together people from across Australia and New Zealand to stimulate debates that challenge the boundaries of present knowledge and ideas about mental health care and mental health systems. • TheMHS Conference: an annual conference held in a different city around Australia and New Zealand each year and attracts approximately 1,000 delegates annually.

• TheMHS Summer Forum is a two day educational program that examines the obstacles to good mental health services, highlights recent research, sets out the challenges, and focuses on policies, programs and directions for the future.
