The Academy for Eating Disorders (AED) is a global professional association committed to leadership in eating disorders research, education, treatment, and prevention. Learn more about AED's founding history. AED helps physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists, academic researchers, students and experts through lived experience connect and collaborate with each other and keep abreast of recent developments in eating disorders research. AED's main event is the annual International Conference on Eating Disorders (ICED), a scientific conference that spans research and education from basic science to cutting edge emerging research in the field. ICED is attended by both leaders and future leaders in the field of Eating Disorders from around the world. The purpose of the Academy for Eating Disorders is to:

  • Promote the effective treatment and care of patients with eating disorders and associated disorders;
  • Develop and advance initiatives for the primary and secondary prevention of eating disorders;
  • Provide education and dissemination of knowledge regarding eating disorders to members of the Academy, other professionals, and the general public;
  • Stimulate and support research in the field;
  • Promote multidisciplinary representation and expertise within the Academy membership and its governing structure;
  • Advocate for the field on behalf of patients, the public, and eating disorder professionals;
  • Assist in the development of guidelines for training, practice and professional conduct within the field; and;

Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative (ANGI) - The Kiarman Family Foundation

The Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative (ANGI) is an initiative that is the largest and most rigorous genetic study of eating disorders ever conducted. ANGI is a global initiative to detect genetic variations that contribute to this potentially life-threatening disease. In total, ANGI collected biological samples and clinical information from 13,363 individuals with anorexia nervosa as well as healthy controls that were matched for ancestry and geography. Karolinska contributed samples from 4247 individuals with anorexia nervosa and 4035 healthy control individuals!. Summary statistics from the Genome-wide association study (GWAS) will be available after publication on the Downloads page of the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium website.

Charlotte's Helix Project
Charlotte's Helix Project

Charlotte's Helix Project is an international coalition working to bring DNA genomics project to the UK to discover genetics of anorexia nervosa and other eating disorders. Charlotte's Helix was founded in the UK to honour the eating disorder advocacy work of Charlotte Bevan.  It was a part of a global effort to collect DNA samples from over 25,000 individuals who have had anorexia at any time in their life, otherwise known as #AN25K. The goal of Charlotte’s Helix was to add at least 1,000 UK DNA samples to #AN25K. As code-breakers for eating disorders, Charlotte's Helix is supporting the #AN25K challenge to chart a #genetic map for anorexia.

Designated a Center of Excellence as part of a New York State initiative, the program is part of New York State Psychiatric Institute, located at Columbia University Medical Center. Hispano Latino American Chapter of the Academy of Eating Disorders

The Hispano Latino American Chapter of the AED is a multidisciplinary group of therapists and researchers from Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking areas of the world. Its active and enthusiastic members work together clinically and academically to advance education, awareness, research, and collaboration in the field of eating disorders. The group regularly hosts a Hispano Latino American Congress on Eating Disorders and several regional symposia. It aims to bring together health professionals who are experts in Eating Disorders from Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries with strictly academic objectives and free of interests to achieve cooperation, exchange of knowledge, research in practices based on scientific evidence to achieve excellence in the study and treatment of eating disorders (ADD) by:

  • Generate knowledge and integrate the collective experience in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Latin American countries on eating disorders.

  • Provide physical or virtual educational platforms for the promotion, understanding, exchange of knowledge, research and integration-practice in the field of eating disorders in Latin American and Spanish-speaking countries

  • Disseminate, contribute, facilitate and increase the knowledge generated in the field of work with TCA through congresses, courses and workshops in the Spanish and Portuguese language.

  • Advise, design and present intervention strategies that affect national public policies of each member country of the chapter to provide or improve TCA treatment services in Latin America, Spain and Portugal.

  • Promote the internal communication of all the members of the Chapter and thus also bilateral communication to the EDA to share experiences and points of interest.

  • Generate human resources through professional training based on AED and CHLA policies for other colleagues and clinical teams in the treatment of eating disorders.

  • Foster innovation and best practices by recognizing excellence in the field of eating disorder treatment and research in CHLA countries

  • Disseminate our mission, vision and our objectives through the media and social networks so that a greater number of people have access to safe and up-to-date information regarding the symptoms and treatments of ACTs.

  • Maintain the CHLA as an associated group recognized by the AED free of conflict of interest and with a one hundred percent academic vision and mission.

The Joy Project is a non-profit organization that aims to empower people with eating disorders by providing real-world, workable strategies and tools for recovery. They provide support, conduct research, and represent the survivor voice in the greater eating disorder advocacy community.

  • Connection: leverage the collective wisdom of survivors and their stories to be shared and used to inspire others as they work through their own recovery process.
