Austin Clubhouse
Austin Clubhouse

Austin Clubhouse provides opportunity and community for adults living with mental health diagnoses.  Austin Clubhouse believes that all members can achieve optimum mental health when they are empowered and equipped to pursue their potential. They provide support to their members in all aspects of their lives through goal planning, advocacy, logistical aid, and resource awareness. Some areas of support include…

  • Employment: Employment is the number one stated goal of Clubhouse members. Whether they are seeking to return to work or find work for the first time, employment can be an important step on the path to recovery. Austin Clubhouse meets members where they are to provide varying levels of support that help members find and keep jobs of their choosing in the community. Our employment programs range from the highly structured support of our Transitional Employment program to the less intensive assistance of Supported Employment and Independent Employment. Wherever a member is in their journey, we can help them engage in meaningful work that provides structure, fulfillment, and the knowledge that they matter.
  • Housing: Everyone needs a safe place to live, and people with mental health diagnoses often face significant housing obstacles. Austin Clubhouse works closely with area housing organizations to help members obtain and keep safe, decent, and affordable housing, whether a member needs emergency shelter or permanent housing. We support members with logistics such as identifying housing options, completing rental applications, and finding waitlist openings. Our housing support services are for everyone experiencing mental health issues, and we take special care to advocate for those who struggle with homelessness, poor rental history, bad credit, criminal records, disabilities, mental health diagnoses, and other housing barriers.
  • Education: Like many people, Austin Clubhouse members dream of self-improvement through education. Some wish to learn a trade. Others want to work in business, health or law. Some are interested in completing an education that they began decades earlier, before they became ill. We help members those dreams a reality by helping people identify educational goals, negotiate admissions, apply for financial aid, and obtain the peer support and tutoring they need to succeed in school.
  • Health + Wellness: Study after study has shown that physical and mental wellness are inextricably linked, which is why we place great emphasis on our Whole Health & Wellness Program, focused on four main areas: nutrition, knowledge about addiction, physical fitness, and better integration with community health resources. Through this program, members receive the help they need to improve their nutrition and fitness, find support and resources to deal with addiction, and discover low cost access to fitness and recreational facilities in our area. In partnership with the University of Texas College of Pharmacy, pharmacy students conduct monthly wellness presentations at the Clubhouse on topics such as stress reduction and medication management.

Bridgeways Clubhouse
Bridgeways Clubhouse

Bridgeways Clubhouse Program works to address both the lack of access to mental health treatment and essential services like employment. The clubhouse model functions around a “work-ordered,” day where members engage in a structured set of daily tasks as a mode to highlight their strengths rather than their weakness. These tasks can be anything from making meals to cleaning the clubhouse. Members therefore work every day to create meaning and community for themselves and the others around them. This form of rehabilitation, functions to provide members with greater confidence and self-esteem to build basic workplace skills and potentially move forward towards re-entering the workplace.

Charter House
Charter House

Charter House is a private club in our community where people who have a mental illness can come during the day.  At Charter House people can feel safe and are not judged because of their mental illness. While here, one can make new friends and is encouraged to learn new skills that can make them proud. Each person is valued for their own unique strengths. Members take an active role in planning and coordinating the daily activities of the clubhouse. Each day we discuss business, coming events, make decisions about social activities and make general announcements. Members also learn coping skills which can help them in their recovery and how to control their mental illness instead of it controlling them.  Membership in our Clubhouse is voluntary and is open to anyone with a history of mental illness.

Clubhouse International Accreditationâ„¢
Clubhouse International Accreditationâ„¢

Clubhouse International Accreditation™ is a symbol of quality – a clear demonstration of a Clubhouse’s commitment to excellence. Today, 75% of Clubhouses are Accredited, compared to just 46% in 2014. These Clubhouses proudly display this icon and are universally recognized as operating with a high level of compliance with the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs.™ In 2018, Clubhouse International developed and distributed Wellness Guidelines to all member Clubhouses, and extended the focus on wellness efforts in our Accreditation process, disseminated the annual Clubhouse Profile Questionnaire, to measure mental health recovery outcomes across our Clubhouses globally and helped 29 Clubhouses achieve Accreditation for the first time, including Clubhouses in Michigan, New Jersey, Argentina and Taiwan.

The Accreditation process is both evaluative and consultative. Accreditation is awarded for either a one- or three-year period, subject to the degree of adherence by the Clubhouse to the Standards. It is conducted by members of the Clubhouse International Faculty, which is composed of veteran members and staff from Accredited Clubhouses around the world. Together, we oversee a rigorous process that includes:

  1. The Self-Study: the entire Clubhouse works together to prepare for the Accreditation visit, evaluating the Clubhouse performance in relationship to the Standards. Each area of the Clubhouse is reviewed and discussed at community meetings, unit meetings, and other special forums. The result of the self-study process is a written report from the Clubhouse to Clubhouse International and the Accreditation team, describing the Clubhouse and its areas of strength and relative weakness as seen by the members and staff.

  2. The Site Visit: accreditation visits are made by members of Clubhouse International's Faculty and last 3-4 days. The Faculty team confirms the information presented in the Self-Study, and meets with members, staff, board members and other stakeholders of the Clubhouse. At the end of the visit, the Faculty team presents their findings, highlighting both areas of strength for the Clubhouse and making recommendations for improvement. This report becomes the foundation for the written report submitted to Clubhouse International.

  3. The Findings Report: upon completion of the Clubhouse visit, the Faculty team prepares and submits a written report to Clubhouse International, which includes: a detailed description of the Clubhouse, a review of the Clubhouse's strengths, specific recommendations as to how the Clubhouse can improve and more fully comply with the Standards, and a recommendation to Clubhouse International regarding Accreditation status for the Clubhouse.

  4. Accreditation Status: after reviewing the report and reaching agreement, the faculty team awards one- or three-year Accreditation, or defers Accreditation, and forwards a letter indicating this Accreditation outcome, along with the written report, to the Clubhouse. Accreditation by Clubhouse International is a credential which affirms that a program is in fact operating as a Clubhouse, and is in substantial compliance with the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs.

  5. Ongoing Consultation: ongoing consultation and technical support may continue with the Clubhouse International Faculty team even after the Accreditation process ends.

  6. Employment Guidelines: the Employment Guidelines are used by the Faculty team as part of the process of reviewing the entire spectrum of opportunities provided by a Clubhouse.

PHOENIX House is a membership-based community where people living with mental illness or trauma can recover to lead personally satisfying and productive lives. Participants – who are called members, not patients, and are reflective of our area’s rich diversity – share ownership and responsibility for the success of the Clubhouse. They work in an empowering partnership with a small staff, building on their strengths rather than focusing on illness. Recovery is achieved in the Clubhouse through work and educational opportunities, and social relationships, which are proven to be restorative and provide a firm foundation for growth, dignity, and individual achievement. PHOENIX House is an operational endeavor that achieves recuperative results with its membership and draws inspiration from and aims to adhere to the 37 Standards of the worldwide Clubhouse movement – a SAMHSA recognized evidence-based practice.
